This has now been sorted by HP. The printer settings have been changed and everything's working again. Apparently the problem lies with my internet provider (TalkTalk) whose routers are sometimes not 'Bonjour compatible. I'm told this is a fairly common problem which arises with Talktalk in relation to apple devices. So for anyone else who has this problem, I would advise you to contact hp first and if they can't sort it out for you, you will need to contact Talktalk, explain the problem, and tell them their router is incompatible with your apple devices and must be changed. It was clear, in my case, that the printer was not at fault because it worked ok with my Microsoft windows devices.
